Don't really know where to start
I use the implant for chemical neuter until my ferrets turn about 18 months old and I'm when comfortable to get them surgically spayed/neutered. Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck with my Jills.
Sassy is 14 months old and was implanted with the 4.7mg Suprelorin at 6 months old along with her brother (same litter). The implant is working like a dream on Samson. Sassy went straight into phantom pregnancy which I understand is quite normal, she is a small ferret and sat at a healthy 900grams (1.9 Lbs) within 2 weeks Sassy ballooned to 1.6Kgs (3.5Lbs). My ferrets are on a full frankenprey diet and Sassy only eats enough to survive....I just have to back peddle a little to get to my point...sorry.
Bella my 2 year old was also implanted at 6 months old - with the exact same weight gain peaking at 1.3kgs (2.86Lbs) - Bella also suffered from re occurring uterine infections. She was continuously on antibiotics which would clear up for a couple of weeks and then return. When she was 18 months old we decided to surgically spay her, My exotics words "it becomes a medical emergency to save a jill with pyo or reproductive organ cancers" Bella lost her weight almost immediately and sits at a healthy 1kg (2.2Lbs), her infections have lessoned but (nothing to do with the implant) was discovered she also has an inverted vulva and gets minor external infections as a result. Bella's implant is has now been in for 18 months, I can still feel it between her shoulder blades.
Back to Sassy. She is so obese that she sleeps 20 hours a day, she waddles instead of running and can't play with her brother or sister for long, her legs slip out from under her on the tiles, she cant groom herself properly. I am concerned about what the extra weight is doing to her heart and her breathing. Sassy is booked in for surgical spay this coming Tuesday in the hope that like Bella, her weight will drop off.
My dilemma is: Do I remove Sassy's implant ? will the spay alone drop her weight like it did Bella? Do I re-implant Bella (she is due) or will she gain the weight again?
As a side note - Boodgie who died of Juvenile Lymphoma at age 18 months was spayed and implanted at the same time when she was 6 months old. She was chubby also and even through 3 months of Chemotherapy she did not lose 1 gram.
I'd be very interested to hear your opinions and from anyone else who has had weight gain as a side effect to the implant. Once again, my only hob is having no issues what so ever.
Thanks
