I had five ferrets, got them all des implants last Jan. One guy was adrenal already - he was a rescue and may have been 5+ years old (vet estimates varied). He improved but then also his insulinoma was unmasked. He survived until April. I'm not sorry I got him implanted. The other four all have preventative implants, and range from almost two years old to a little over three. So far all is well.

I'll also add my experience with DES and my ferrets. I got here after I visited the Holistic Ferret forum. My name is Birgit and I'm from the Netherlands. I have ferrets for 15 years now.
In 2004, the implant was first introduced in the Netherlands (with Nico Schoemaker) and in 2005, I had a group with 4 ferret-males.
All ferrets were born in May and Juni 2005 and I had the 4.7 mgimplant (works 2 years, there is also the 9.4 mg implant that works for four years).
27-1-2006: 1st implant 28-12-2007: 2nd implant 1-12-2009:3th implant
My ferretsgroup unfortunately died in 2011 and the last one in april 2012. Two ferrets because of kidney failure and the two others had other problems. The last one had his implant for 2,5 years when he died.
In May this year, I fell in love with a 'in heat' ferretmale in a animal shelter. As I was very pleased with the implant, I also gave this fellow a implant. I made a new topic for him with pictures of the effect.
This is in a nutshell my story with DES. When you have any questions, just ask me.

My name is Candice Boggs and I have been reading about the Deslorelin implant since before getting our first ferret almost two years ago (will be two in March). We are unsure of his exact age as we were told he was about 1 when we got him, but about a year later when we brought him in we were told he had had adrenal disease for some time. I am interested in all aspects of adrenal treatment as well as potentially using the implant for chemical s/n in the future. Our ferret, Teddy, was diagnosed with adrenal disease May '12 when he received his first implant; he is also being treated with Lupron. I would like to read more about what other ferret owners are seeing in terms of implant duration and how often to re-implant.

Hi, I'm Chris. I've learned some very hard lessons in the 4-5 years I've had ferrets, which have helped keeping the current crew healthier and safer. We only have one who has had a des implant. Kahlua has had 3 in 5 years. She's 8 and not showing visible sighs of adrenal, though she was diagnosed at age 3. My wife and I have had 23 ferrets between us, and currently share living arrangements with 10.

Hi and welcome to the group! Yes it seems that using the implant as a preventative helps a great deal if done early enough in the ferrets life.
